In The End, Give It Everything
Jun 30, 2024As a manager, you may often chase perfection in everything you do, be it a report, an email, or a training session you've been asked to develop. It is common for uncertainty to make its way into your mind before you type in the last full stop or press the send button. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with wanting to ensure perfection with everything that comes from you. After all, you are a key component in the company's operations.
You Cannot Do Everything Right
As a human being, you can't possibly do everything right. Something, or someone, will always remind you of your mistakes or the damage you caused, especially when you're on a roll. When you're on a hike, the trail may look extremely daunting even before you take the first step. So, what do you do?
Most people try to be perfectionists, aiming for perfection in all their tasks. However, this mindset comes with its downsides. First, it hinders your ability to do anything right, even the tasks at which you may be good (or perfect). Moreover, you will keep second-guessing yourself instead of taking a step in any direction.
The Importance of Giving It Everything
Managers have many tasks in their daily routine that they know nothing about. In this case, the only thing to do is to do what you can, i.e., to the best of your abilities. That doesn't mean you do everything half-heartedly or accept defeat before you even start – that's for quitters only.
Instead, you should give it your absolute best. If you feel a task is worth performing, you want to do it right. Sometimes, giving it your best shot is the only thing standing between you and perfection or success.
Giving everything to a task or challenge means doing it with passion, emotion, and effort. Most people are afraid of exhibiting their weaknesses and vulnerabilities or revealing that they don't know how to perform a certain task. Instead of fearing that you might not be the best person for the task, commit to the task at hand fully.
In the end, give it everything. This mantra should guide you throughout your life's journey, be it your ambitions, career, health, finances, etc. Usually, this begins with accepting that you can't do everything right; what matters is your commitment to the task and your willingness to learn what is needed to accomplish it.
If you feel you can't give it your all, the task or challenge may not be yours. Even then, don't stop yourself from doing it. You'll have plenty of time to learn and improve or move on to something else.
