When You Fall, Who Will Catch?
Aug 13, 2023Have you ever been in a situation where someone is blaming you for something when you’re not to be blamed? A supportive person stepping in to help you at that point can make a significant difference. In fact, some people might also take responsibility for their actions just to save you.
Although these scenarios aren’t quite common in the corporate world, there are instances where we see them happening. This is particularly the case for managers who need to have the support of their team members when dealing with higher management.
So, why is having someone to catch you when you fall is important? And what is something managers can do to ensure people support and stand up for them in difficult times? Let’s discuss it in this article.
Why Do Managers Need To Have The Support Of Their Employees?
Employees’ support gives managers the confidence that people will stick by them in tough times. Most importantly, you will know they will have your back if things go wrong. The last thing you need is to have no one behind you when performing trust falls.
In addition to employees, managers also need to have the support of their peers. They need someone to defend their position during the board meeting or other instances.
How Can You Get the Support of Other People?
Realistically speaking, it is not wise for someone to support and have your side if you are not willing to do the same for them. As a manager, you need to be supportive of your employees. If they have made a mistake unintentionally, you should support them and defend them in front of the management.
But there are a few instances where you shouldn’t defend or take responsibility for other people’s actions. For example, you shouldn’t stand for them if they do something illegal or unethical. Also, managers shouldn’t defend people only for using it as a “payback.”
Showing trust in your team and supporting them during tough times will increase harmony and cohesiveness among the team members. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should share the rewards with your entire team.
Sharing rewards and credits with your team will send a positive message. It will also encourage people to take the blame or stand with you if things go wrong.
How Should Managers Stand Up for Others?
Managers should have a clear strategy when it comes to defending people. It will also let you know whether you should defend someone for their actions. Here are a few pointers to help you out:
- Have a clear set of values
- Assess the situation and know what the risks are before diving into anything
- Think about the strategy you want to pursue and act accordingly
- Be diplomatic and make sure you don’t say anything that goes against you
Final Words
Supporting people in their bad times is a two-way street. If you want your employees to support you during bad times, you should do the same for them.
